Early May 2026 inside a Dedham, Massachusetts courtroom during the trial of Commonwealth v. Stefon Diggs. After a two-day trial, a Norfolk County jury deliberated for a mere 90 minutes before returning clean “not guilty” verdicts on all counts for the former NFL wide receiver Stefon Diggs.
The Norfolk County District Attorney’s office pursued two specific charges based on a December 2, 2025, altercation at Diggs’ Dedham residence involving his former live-in personal chef, Jamila “Mila” Adams, also known as “Chef Mila”. The state brought a felony charge of strangulation or suffocation under Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 265, Section 15D, which requires proof that a defendant intentionally obstructed the normal breathing or blood circulation of another by applying pressure to the neck or throat.
Alongside the felony, Diggs faced a misdemeanor count of assault and battery under Section 13A for an alleged open-handed slap. The operational stakes for Diggs were high, carrying a potential maximum sentence of up to seven and a half years of incarceration if convicted and sentenced consecutively.
In a criminal prosecution, the state bears the absolute burden of proving every element of a charge beyond a reasonable doubt. Because the accuser waited a full 14 days after the alleged incident to file a report with the Dedham Police Department, the Commonwealth was forced to try this case without forensic or medical evidence. The record showed no medical visits, emergency calls, or photographic evidence of physical trauma.
On cross-examination, defense attorney David Meier countered the allegations by presenting testimony from multiple household employees, including a chief of staff, a traveling nurse, and a hairstylist who stated they interacted with Adams immediately following the alleged incident date and observed no physical injuries or signs of distress. The defense also introduced video evidence of the accuser traveling to New York City shortly after the incident date.
The core of the defense strategy focused on establishing an alternative motive for the criminal complaint. Under cross-examination, the defense established that the conflict originally began as a standard dispute over a $2,000 weekly salary. However, testimony revealed that prior to the criminal complaint, the accuser’s civil counsel issued a $5.5 million settlement demand to Diggs’ legal team. The defense argued that the severe criminal accusations were being used as financial leverage.
The challenges facing the prosecution’s presentation became evident during closing arguments, when Assistant District Attorney Drew Virtue addressed the jury regarding his primary witness, acknowledging that while she was “argumentative, avoidant, and difficult” her testimony should still be weighed carefully.
Ultimately, the 90 minute acquittal by the Norfolk County jury highlights the strict standard of proof required by the justice system. A criminal conviction demands undeniable facts over conflicting personal accounts, especially when a significant financial counter motive is
introduced. While Judge Jeanmarie Carroll ordered the immediate sealing of Diggs’ criminal record under Massachusetts law, and the NFL also concluded its personal conduct review with no disciplinary action. This case serves as a clear textbook example of how the legal standard inside a courtroom operates entirely separate from public speculation.
