Preparing for Practice: How FOREVER LEGAL Academy Interns Learn Timekeeping and Billing Discipline

When most people think about legal careers, they think about courtroom advocacy, legal research, drafting contracts, negotiating settlements, or advising clients.

Few think about timekeeping and billing discipline.

Yet these skills are among the most important operational and professional competencies attorneys develop throughout their careers. In many legal environments, accurately tracking time, documenting work performed, and maintaining detailed records are essential responsibilities.

At FOREVER LEGAL Academy, we believe exposure to these concepts should begin long before a student enters law school or their first professional role.

One of the most valuable lessons interns learn in the FOREVER LEGAL Academy has nothing to do with case law, legal writing, or legal research. It involves learning how to accurately account for their time, document their work product, and develop the professional habits that are expected within law firms and other professional service organizations.

The Weekly Commitment

The FOREVER LEGAL Academy requires interns to commit approximately 8 to 10 hours per week throughout the semester.
These hours may include:

  • Legal research
  • Drafting assignments
  • Brand and marketing projects
  • Team meetings
  • Professional development presentations
  • Training sessions
  • Content creation
  • Administrative assignments
  • Special projects

As interns complete their work, they are expected to accurately document their time and activities.

Internship Hours Logs and Work Logs

All interns are required to submit their Internship Hours Log and FOREVER LEGAL Work Log on the 1st and 15th of each month.

These submissions must accurately reflect:

  • Hours worked during the reporting period
  • A detailed summary of tasks completed
  • Cumulative hours earned
  • Any approved carryover hours
  • Other required reporting information

To ensure consistency and accuracy, all interns receive formal training on how to properly complete these logs and maintain professional records. Failure to submit required logs in a timely manner may result in corrective action or disciplinary measures.

Why Timekeeping Matters

Many students have never been asked to track their time before entering a professional environment. However, in the legal profession, timekeeping is often an essential part of law firm operations. Attorneys and legal professionals frequently work on multiple matters throughout the day. Accurate time records help ensure work is documented properly, projects are managed effectively, and services performed on behalf of clients are accounted for appropriately.

Learning how to track time accurately is a professional skill that many law students do not encounter until they begin working in a law firm. FOREVER LEGAL Academy interns begin developing that skill much earlier.

Learning the Importance of Billing Narratives

Tracking time is only one part of the process. The other part is learning how to document work clearly, professionally, and with sufficient detail. In many legal environments, professionals are expected to provide descriptions of the work completed during a particular time entry. These descriptions, commonly referred to as billing narratives, help explain the nature and purpose of the work performed.

For example, rather than writing:
“Worked on research.”

A stronger and more professional entry would state:
“Conducted legal research regarding premises liability standards and summarized findings for attorney review.”

The difference is significant. One description provides little insight into the work performed. The other demonstrates substance, value, and professionalism.
Learning how to draft meaningful billing narratives teaches interns to think critically about their work, communicate effectively, and articulate the value of their contributions.

Building Accountability and Professional Habits

Timekeeping is about far more than recording hours. It is about developing discipline, accountability, organization, and consistency. Successful professionals understand how they spend their time. They understand how long tasks take to complete. They understand how to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines.
By requiring interns to maintain accurate records, the Academy helps participants develop habits that will serve them throughout law school, graduate school, and their future careers.

A Real World Skill Before Entering the Profession

One of the goals of the FOREVER LEGAL Academy is to expose participants to aspects of professional life that are often overlooked in traditional academic settings.

  • Legal research matters.
  • Writing matters.
  • Communication matters.
  • But understanding how professional work is tracked, documented, managed, and reported is equally important.

The Academy provides interns with an opportunity to gain exposure to these expectations before entering law school or beginning their professional careers. This experience helps bridge the gap between classroom learning and workplace expectations.

Support and Training Are Provided

No intern is expected to know how to track time perfectly on day one. Every Academy participant receives guidance, training materials, a legal billing conversion chart, and instruction regarding best practices for maintaining accurate records.

Interns are taught:

  • Timekeeping expectations
  • Work log requirements
  • Time conversion methods
  • Professional documentation practices
  • Billing narrative best practices
  • Common timekeeping mistakes to avoid

The goal is not perfection. The goal is preparation.

More Than an Internship

At FOREVER LEGAL, we believe preparation happens in the details. Learning how to manage deadlines, document work, communicate professionally, and account for your time are all part of becoming a successful professional. The Academy is designed to provide more than experience. It is designed to provide exposure to the real expectations that exist within professional environments and law firm structures. Because success is not just about what you know. It is also about how you work.

How to Apply

If you have read this far and still believe the FOREVER LEGAL Academy is the right fit for you, we encourage you to apply.

Prospective applicants must submit:

  • A current résumé
  • A cover letter explaining their interest in the Academy and how the program aligns with their academic and professional goals

Application materials should be emailed to: info@discoverforeverlegal.com

Qualified applicants will be invited to participate in a formal Zoom interview. Depending on the applicant pool and position sought, the interview process may consist of one or more rounds with Attorney Tiara Seals and/or Executive Administrator Sabrina Donatto, who oversees the Academy’s operations and internship experience. Because the Academy maintains intentionally small cohorts, admission is competitive.

Typically, only a select number of interns are chosen each semester, allowing participants to receive individualized mentorship, meaningful assignments, and direct access to professionals within their area of interest.

Before submitting your application, ask yourself:

  • Are you willing to manage deadlines?
  • Are you willing to receive feedback?
  • Are you willing to be challenged?
  • Are you willing to show up consistently, even when the work becomes demanding?

If the answer is yes, we encourage you to apply.

The FOREVER LEGAL Academy is not designed for everyone. It is designed for those who are serious about growth. The opportunities are limited. The expectations are high. The impact can last FOREVER. If you believe you have what it takes, submit your application and show us why you belong in the next Academy cohort.
