Inside the FOREVER LEGAL Internship Academy: A Firsthand Perspective from Intern Jaliyah Rouse

The FOREVER LEGAL Internship Academy was never intended to be an ordinary internship program. It was designed for individuals who understand that success is built through preparation, accountability, professionalism, and a willingness to be challenged. Each semester, Academy participants are entrusted with meaningful work, exposed to the realities of the legal profession, and encouraged to develop the habits that separate professionals from spectators. Designed for ambitious pre-law students, recent graduates, and aspiring law school applicants, the Academy serves as a professional readiness program that bridges the gap between academic learning and real-world experience. Of course, we could tell you what makes the Academy different. Instead, we asked the people who experienced it firsthand. To help future applicants better understand the program, we asked our interns a series of questions about their experience, including what they learned, what challenged them, what surprised them, and what advice they would give to those considering the Academy in the future. The responses that follow provide an honest look into the expectations, opportunities, growth, and realities of the FOREVER LEGAL Internship Academy through the voices of the interns themselves.

INSIDE THE ACADEMY: JALIYAH’S PERSPECTIVE.

What should future applicants know before entering the program?

Before entering the program, future applicants should know that they are going to learn so much and view so many different perspectives of the legal field throughout this program. You should also know that you will have to put the work in when it comes to the things you are assigned, but getting started early will take you a very long way. It is important to know that this program is to help you at the end of the day, so what you put out and how seriously you take the program will determine your experience. Taking initiative and staying organized will allow you to get the most out of every assignment. You really want to come in with an open mind and a readiness to be challenged.

What would you tell someone who is thinking about applying?

Be yourself, and don’t overthink about applying. You will never know if you can get in until you apply, and you will be surprised how welcoming and kind everyone is. This environment is built on growth, so you don’t need to feel like you have to be the finished product before you even start. If you have a passion for the law and a desire to learn, you are already halfway there. Just take that leap of faith and let your authentic personality show through in your application. You have nothing to lose and so much knowledge to gain from this experience.

What kind of person thrives in this program?

The kind of person that thrives in this program is someone who is willing to work and who pays attention to detail; that is not to say that you have to be perfect or that mistakes won’t happen, that is simply saying you are actively trying and giving your all in your commitments in this internship program. Reliability is everything when you are working on real legal tasks. Someone who is coachable and can take feedback without getting discouraged will go very far here. You also need to be the type of person who isn’t afraid to ask questions when things get complex. Ultimately, it’s about having a strong work ethic and showing up every day ready to contribute to the firm.

What is one skill you developed that you will carry forward?

My legal writing skills, specifically case briefing skills, as an undergraduate student, I hadn’t been introduced to case briefing yet, but being that this is something that you will 100% have to do in law school, I took it very seriously when we were assigned case briefs. In doing so, I received very good feedback, and while there may be some things that I can polish and get better at over time, I now know that I have a solid foundation, so that when I do get into law school, I won’t be completely clueless. I feel much more confident in my ability to break down complex opinions and find the relevant law. This skill is something I know will be a big help in my future academic career. I am grateful for the chance to practice this now rather than later.

How has this program changed the way you think about law or business?

This program has made me truly understand that my career in law will be “what I do” and not “who I am”; that is not taking away my passion or excitement that I’ll have for the career, but it is saying that I will not make it my personality or lose myself within it. I will remain grounded in who I am and what I love while also practicing a career I love. Seeing how professionals balance their work and their personal lives has been a real eye opener for me. It makes the idea of being an attorney feel more sustainable and rewarding in the long run. I now know that I can be a dedicated attorney without sacrificing my own identity.

What moment made everything “click” for you?

The moment that made everything click for me is during our mid semester evaluations; I’ve always been pretty sure on what career path I’ve wanted to take, but after hearing good feedback from an actual practicing attorney, it kind of solidified things for me and my future. It was a motivational reassurance that I am on the right track and that this career is for me. Hearing that my hard work was being noticed by someone in the field gave me a new level of confidence. It turned my “maybe” into a definite “yes” regarding my potential in this profession. I walked away from that evaluation feeling more driven to reach my goals.

What was your favorite experience and why?

My favorite experience by far would have to be the presentations; I really enjoy hearing from successful professionals and learning about the things that got them where they are along with how their careers are currently going. I was able to see so many different sides of law, but what made it so special is they were not trying to be super serious or remain in attorney mode while presenting; they were so open and willing to show us that aside from their career, they were once just like us. It made the legal world feel much more accessible and less intimidating. Being able to ask them direct questions about their journeys was incredibly helpful for my own planning. I really appreciated their transparency and their willingness to help us during their presentations.

How did this experience shape your confidence or professionalism?

This program shaped my confidence and professionalism by giving me multiple opportunities to work at it and improve; I had so many times where I had to draft emails and type professionally, and with a willingness to learn and repetition, it just became natural. Regarding confidence, you’ll soon realize that you have no choice but to be confident; even if you don’t fully feel that way, no one else should know. I’ve learned how to carry myself like I know exactly what I’m doing even when I’m tackling something new for the first time. The “fake it until you make it” mindset at times has actually helped me develop genuine self-assurance. I now feel prepared to handle any professional interaction with clarity.

What makes FOREVER LEGAL Internship Academy different from other programs?

I would say the academy is different from other programs due to the willingness to show interns the reality. FOREVER LEGAL is not constantly only showing the glitz and glamour of the profession and trying to make it all peaches and cream; this program takes pride in showing the ins and outs, the good times and the bad, and the fact that attorneys are humans too, just like me and you. This level of honesty is rare, and it helps us prepare for the actual challenges we will face. It doesn’t sugarcoat the workload or the pressure. I feel like I have a much more balanced view of the legal profession because of this transparency.

I will never forget _.

That being early is being on time, and being on time is late. Along with that, I will never forget the importance of honoring my commitments. This program has shown me how honoring my commitments and getting things done on time will help me in the end; you become known as trustworthy and dependable, and these are things people will appreciate a lot in this field. I have seen firsthand how valuable you can become when you do exactly what you said you would. It’s a standard of excellence that I plan to carry into law school and my future practice. Being a Person of my word is a professional trait I will never let go of.
