Inside the FOREVER LEGAL Internship Academy: A Firsthand Perspective from Intern Aliayah Lawrence

The FOREVER LEGAL Internship Academy was never intended to be an ordinary internship program. It was designed for individuals who understand that success is built through preparation, accountability, professionalism, and a willingness to be challenged. Each semester, Academy participants are entrusted with meaningful work, exposed to the realities of the legal profession, and encouraged to develop the habits that separate
professionals from spectators. Designed for ambitious pre-law students, recent graduates, and aspiring law school applicants, the Academy serves as a professional readiness program that bridges the gap between academic learning and real-world experience. Of course, we could tell you what makes the Academy different. Instead, we asked the people who experienced it firsthand. To help future applicants better understand the program, we asked our interns a series of questions about their experience, including what they learned, what challenged them, what surprised them, and what advice they would give to those considering the Academy in the future. The responses that follow provide an honest look into the expectations, opportunities, growth, and realities of the FOREVER LEGAL Internship Academy through the voices of the interns themselves.

INSIDE THE ACADEMY: ALIAYAH’S PERSPECTIVE.

Tell me something you learned in the program that you did not expect.

As a FOREVER LEGAL intern, I learned about billable hours, which I did not expect going into the program. I had always heard about billable hours in law shows and when law firms come out to speak, but I never fully understood how it worked. During my internship at FOREVER LEGAL, we were required to log everything we did, including assignments, readings, client calls, and emails. Attorney Seals emphasized building this habit early because it reflects how attorneys track their time and bill clients. This experience helped me understand the discipline and structure needed to work as an attorney.

Tell me about a challenge you faced during the program and how you handled it.

One challenge I faced during the program at FOREVER LEGAL was staying organized and meeting assignments by their due dates. I also struggled at times with reaching out for extra help when I needed it. To handle this, I started calendaring all of my assignments and deadlines to stay on track. I made it a habit to double check dates and times to ensure everything was accurate. This approach helped me become more organized, accountable, and proactive throughout the program.

What surprised you most about the program?

What surprised me most about the program at FOREVER LEGAL was that it was a readiness internship, not a typical internship. Attorney Seals really broke things down in a way that made it easy for us to understand. She also brought in guest attorneys and other professionals, which gave us exposure beyond just legal work. We were able to learn from people who spoke about mental health and others who helped us with interview skills. This readiness program helped me better understand professionalism and prepared me for the legal field.

How has this program prepared you for your future career?

FOREVER LEGAL has really taught me what the expectations of being an attorney are. It showed me the amount of work and research that goes into the job, especially because you are handling real clients and important matters. I learned that professionalism and organization are critical, and you cannot mix things up or make assumptions. At FOREVER LEGAL, I also saw how important it is to manage different clients and stay on top of everything at all times. This program prepared me to be more disciplined, detail oriented, and accountable with no excuses.

What is one skill you developed that you will carry forward?

One skill I developed at FOREVER LEGAL is learning how to communicate with confidence and professionalism. I learned the importance of always having an answer or approach, even if I do not immediately know the solution. If I am unsure, I now say I will look into it further rather than sounding uncertain. Attorney Seals emphasized not being overly apologetic but instead focusing on fixing the issue right away. This taught me to be confident, solution focused, and proactive in my work.

How has this program changed the way you think about law or business?

At FOREVER LEGAL, I learned that law and business are closely connected. The way a firm presents its brand can influence whether a potential client decides to move forward. I saw how professionalism, communication, and image all play a role in building trust. This experience showed me that legal knowledge alone is not enough how you present and run your business matters too. It changed the way I think about law as both a service and a business.

What makes FOREVER LEGAL Academy different from other programs?

What makes FOREVER LEGAL Internship Academy different from other programs is that it truly serves as a foundation for the legal field. At first, it may seem like a typical internship, but it goes beyond that by building real skills and habits needed for a legal career. My experience at FOREVER LEGAL helped me grow in professionalism, discipline, and confidence. The program shapes how you approach your work and understand the expectations of being an attorney. Once a FOREVER LEGAL intern, you carry those lessons with you throughout your journey.

What should future applicants know before entering the program?

The kind of person who thrives in FOREVER LEGAL is someone who is organized and stays on top of all assignments and project deadlines. They are not afraid to ask for help when needed and take initiative in their learning. Strong communication skills and the ability to work well in a team are also important. They are reliable, punctual, and take their responsibilities seriously. Overall, it is someone who is disciplined, proactive, and is able to take feedback.

What should future applicants know before entering the program?

Future applicants should know that at FOREVER LEGAL, attention to detail is extremely important. Attorney Seals does not miss anything, so you must always double check your work before submitting it. Her team operates the same way and pays close attention to everything. They will point out mistakes, so you should be prepared to receive feedback and make corrections. This program will push you to be precise, accountable, and continuously improve.

Describe your experience in three words and explain why.

    Challenging, Transformative, Rewarding.
My experience at FOREVER LEGAL was challenging because there were a lot of emails and assignments coming in at once, and it was hard to stay on top of everything. There was no one there to hold your hand, and you are held accountable for your actions. It was transformative because it built the habits and discipline you need for law school and the legal field. It was rewarding because I gained real insight from Attorney Seals and her peers, who are attorneys from different areas like general counsel and other practice fields.
